Somaliland NEC Observing Taiwan Elections
Mr. Musa Hassan Yousuf, along with five commissioners and one technical worker from the Somaliland National Electoral Commission (NEC) is scheduled to pay an official visit to Taiwan.
Somaliland and Taiwan share profound similarities in their commitment to democratic values and freedoms. Both Somaliland and Taiwan stand as beacons of democracy in their respective regions, and this visit aims to further enhance the collaboration between the two nations in promoting democratic ideals.
On January 13, 2024, there will be presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan. The Somaliland NEC team will be one of the international observers there.
The team met with Taiwan’s ambassador in Somaliland – Ambassador Allen Chenhwa Lou, for a goodbye banquet and farewell gathering today.
During their stay, the Somaliland National Electoral Commission will engage in a series of meetings and visits to key institutions in Taiwan. This includes the Central Election Commission, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Justice, and the international affairs departments of Taiwan’s major political parties. These engagements aim to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and insights on electoral procedures, regulations, and administrative coordination.
The delegation will also have the honor of a courtesy call with His Excellency Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, highlighting the diplomatic significance of this visit. Furthermore, Mr. Yousuf and his team will attend a banquet hosted by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Remus Li-Kuo Chen, providing an opportunity for informal discussions and fostering camaraderie.
In addition to official engagements, the Somaliland Electoral Commission will meet with civic organizations to gain a deeper understanding of citizen participation in Taiwan’s democratic system and their role in political oversight. These interactions are anticipated to provide valuable insights into Taiwan’s electoral operations and related regulations.
These sort of exchanges will not only deepen the friendship between Somaliland and Taiwan but also contribute to Somaliland’s knowledge base in electoral procedures and administrative practices.
