Pharo’s Women Literacy Program in Somaliland
On July 6th, Pharo Foundation held a ceremony for the second batch of Mothers Literacy Programme graduates who completed their studies. It was another great success as a total of 250 mothers graduated from the program. Of these graduates, 200 were from the Literacy program and 50 from the skills development program
The primary motivation for launching these programmes was the Foundation’s recognition of the importance of mothers’ literacy in early childhood education. A literate and knowledgeable mother plays a crucial role in supporting her children academically, socially, and emotionally, which is vital for producing successful students.
Mothers have been incredibly enthusiastic about the programme, and there is a strong interest in the opportunities provided by Pharo Foundation. Women often face various obstacles that hinder their ability to learn or pursue education. Therefore, the programme aims to address these issues and contribute to the community’s socio-economic development by investing in early childhood education and empowering mothers.
The Literacy Programme began in December 2021 with the participation of mothers from three ECE schools: Faadumo Biixi, Daloodho, and Alifdoon. It was a tremendous success, and 74 mothers graduated in June 2022. Due to its success, the literacy programme was further expanded to encompass more ECEschools and is currently being implemented in six schools.
In August 2022, the Foundation initiated the skills development program for graduates to enhance their employability. As a result, 50 graduates enrolled in a course of sewing classes for six months.
The ceremony this year was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sciences, senior management from Pharo Foundation, parents, students, and teachers, who all delivered speeches and celebrated the women’s achievements. The event highlighted the significance of empowering women to create a more educated community.
