Speaker Faratoon Convening Emergent Meeting to Strip MP Abiib of Legislative Immunity
A new order about the ongoing plan to remove legislative immunity from MP Mohamed Abib Yusuf Jama of the House of Representatives was announced today by Yasin Haji Mohamud Hir (Faratoon), the chairman of the Somaliland House of Representatives.
Speaker Faratoon asked in writing for an extraordinary meeting of the House of Representatives of Somaliland in order to revoke MP Abib’s legislative immunity in light of the grave charges made against him by the government’s public prosecutor..
The Speaker remarked that the emergency meeting is scheduled for next Thursday at 830 in the morning and urged the Members of Parliament to come.
The main motive behind stripping immunity of Mohamed Abib is primarily to facilitate a government move to bring him before the courts for a trial.
Since the Awdal region is where MP Abiib was elected, people there have largely accepted him despite his fierce opposition to President Muse Bihi.
He began arranging meetings with the people he represents and devising political plans in Boorama in response to the presidential lawsuit.
Prosecutors allege that the MP met with officials from the Somali Embassy in Djibouti and publicly discussed issues relating to the Somaliland army.
MP Mohamed Abib, a House of Representatives member, traveled to Djibouti in late May, and he recently verified the journey with the media, mentioning that he received a Djibouti passport.
The MP’s story gained attention when the President of Djibouti publicly announced a declaration of war against Somaliland after meeting with the leader of SSC-Khatumo. It is widely believed among Somaliland publicthat this Member of Parliament has acted against the interests of the nation and he deserves to be dealt accordingly.
Bringing charges against a public official is a widespread practice in democracies that doesn’t just happen in Somaliland. Lately in the United States, a court convicted one of the Senators for corruption.
U.S. Senator Bob Menendez was found guilty in a wide-ranging corruption case where he allegedly took gold and cash bribes from three businessmen and worked as a representative for the Egyptian government.
