Conspiracy of the South & Carelessness of Somaliland Politicians in 1960s
Once the decision was made to unite the newly-born country – that gained independence on June 26, 1960 – with Italian Somalia, Somaliland politicians should have worked hard to do so in accordance with international laws and avoid the mistakes done in consummating the merger.
At the point when you glance back at history through the binocular of the literature and articles covering this recorded reality, it strikes a chord that Somaliland elites at the time of independence did not have a good knowledge and grasp of what independence is.
The current breed of Somaliland politicians are faced again with the same dilemma of tribal infighting, muscling down each other, and keeping intellectuals away at arm’s length as well as deeming them as threats in the wake of realizing the nation’s most ambitious priority. The current Somaliland case in 2021 is not different from the the independence case in 1960 and deserves to be treated accordingly – it is all about the destiny of this nation and shouldn’t be left alone with the discretion of politicians.
The following report, written by EUGENE COTRAN in July 1963, is proof enough that Southern politicians were not faithful and Somaliland politicians either underestimated the process or were clueless about it.
