Is the MoU Between Ethiopia and Somaliland Still in Effect?
Dr. Isse Kayd Mohamud, the departing Foreign Affairs Minister of Somaliland, told the BBC about the memorandum of understanding that President Bihi’s administration signed with Ethiopia and whether it came to an end when the Somali president and the Ethiopian prime minister agreed on the issue.
Dr. Isse Kayd stated that in order to move forward with the deal’s completion, they will give copies of the agreement to the new administration that President Irro established.
“The Memorandum of Understanding with Ethiopia is not something that should be taken lightly because it represented the ambitions of the nation and the Somaliland people. Because the original signed clauses needed to be modified to benefit both countries and peoples, the MoU was signed by experts from both sides who had been working on it for some time,” stated the departing foreign minister of Somaliland.
He went on to say that the MoU, which was meant to be advantageous to both sides, is in their best interests, and that there are no barriers in its way. The agreement also has a solid legal foundation.
“The relationship between Somaliland and Ethiopia remains unchanged, and there are now no barriers to the Memorandum of Understanding. Isse Kayd stated, “The two are discussing the completion of the MOU, the other agreements, and the things that we need to see reflected in them.”
According to the minister, they have been in close communication and are currently making good progress since they signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Ethiopia.
“We stay in close communication regarding these matters concerning the Memorandum of Understanding. The minister went on to say, “The new administration under President Irro will continue to stay on course for this issue.”According to Dr. Ise Kayd, his ministry has given the MoU’s documentation to Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro and his administration.
“We are not concerned about that meeting. We don’t care what Ethiopia and Somalia have agreed to or haven’t agreed to. “No one else can dictate what we do with our seas because we are a sovereign nation that determines our own fate,” Issa Kayd stated.Da’uud Aweys – the Somali Minister of Information’s claim that Ethiopia had withdrawn from the Memorandum of Understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia is untrue, according to Dr. Isse Kayd.”We are Somaliland, and they are Somalia. Therefore, let Mogadishu be free of terrorism before everything else. The departing Somaliland Minister of Foreign Affairs declared,
“They will never be able to govern or claim Somaliland’s land and sea.”
