Somaliland President: “It’s Not Somalia, al-Sisi; It is Gaza That Needs You”

President Bihi said, “Let Egypt help the people of Palestine if they care about anything.”

Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has reacted to recent comments made by Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud concerning the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreed upon between Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1, 2024.

The agreement allows Ethiopia to reach the Red Sea via a military base and port in Somaliland, as Somaliland aims for complete independence from Somalia.

President Bihi restated that Somaliland will stick to its position on independence and gave a caution to foreign powers trying to force Somaliland to reunite with Somalia. He specifically condemned Egypt for trying to sway Somaliland’s decision.

Somaliland is actively seeking international recognition and is committed to moving forward with its decision, such as conducting elections and safeguarding its land against any outside dangers. President Bihi emphasized that Somaliland will proceed with its elections as planned, with the upcoming vote scheduled for November 13, 2024.

The regional dynamics add further complexity, with Egypt, currently in dispute with Ethiopia over Nile waters, recently entering a military agreement with Somalia’s federal government in Mogadishu.

President Bihi delivered these comments while visiting various areas in Somaliland, where he also sought support for his re-election bid before the upcoming November election. He checked the preparedness of Somaliland forces at a military base in Oog town on Sunday.

General Nuh Tani, addressing the soldiers at the military base, stressed the readiness of the army to protect the borders of Somaliland, including the disputed region of Laascaanood, without specifically mentioning it. General Nuh Tani expressed his desire to reclaim their victory and achieve success.
