Mismatch in Skills Supply & Demand in Somaliland

Mismatch in Skills Supply & Skills Demand in Somaliland

The much-needed job skills in Somaliland have become a booming market for foreigners, particularity Africans from neighboring countries such as  Kenyans.

Four year degrees mostly offered in higher education institutions in Somaliland do not meet today’s employment needs in the country. This video clip shot by CHAMS Media Ltd – an independent online content production company – is enough testament for this mismatch.

Somaliland education priorities and policies are not in sync with the realities on the ground. Vocational and skills training institutes that focus on producing technicians, plumbers, and carpenters are missing and have instead been replaced with the easy fix of recruiting skilled workers from abroad.

Unemployment among Somaliland’s youth can be attributed to their lack of proper training for the various job opportunities available in the country, given the current state of development in the country.
