SLPA is off to a strong start for the new year as our first event was a success! We wanted to share with you an innovative event SLPA held in Hargeisa, Somaliland a few weeks ago. The event was hosted and organized by SLPA committee member, Faiza Ali, who brilliantly guided the conversation of the 15 SLPA attendees. The SLPA members were from a vast variety of backgrounds, visiting Somaliland either for work, vacation, or potential relocation
The meeting started approximately at 8 o’clock with an icebreaker activity allowing the attendees to introduce themselves and name one thing they would change about Somaliland. Faisa then moved on to a presentation to introduce what SLPA is and how members can get involved. Then she proceeded to have a roundtable discussion about how members can mobilize to create a better and more developed Somaliland.
These are the major points discussed:
- Creating a brain trust within SLPA to develop Somaliland
- Creating bus stops and imported busses
- Start a social enterprise to fix roads
- Create an American House
- Need a High-level sponsor to create programming
- Create a blockchain and/or cryptocurrency
- Set up a venture capital fund
- SLPA mentoring program to be expanded to Hargeisa
- Have a monthly coffee meet up to network
- Vote on having a committee
- Band together to advocate for an issue (justice system, human rights violations, women’s health, etc.
Way forward:
- Have another coffee meet-up sponsored by Gollis University next month.
- Solidify committees so we can move to fundraise and make a change!
