Somaliland Presidential & Parties Elections Set for November 13, 2024
November 13, 2024, is the date set for presidential and political party elections, according to a Saturday announcement made by the Somaliland Electoral Commission (NEC)
Muse Hassan Yusuf, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, disclosed that the candidates of the current three national political parties—Kulmiye, UCID, and Waddani—will vie for the presidency of the nation. Along with Kulmiye, UCID, and Waddani, ten other political organizations will compete for the race of becoming a national political party for the next tens years in the same election, as the chairman continued saying.
A new electoral law authorized simultaneous presidential and political party elections for the first time was passed by the Parliament earlier in 2024. The election date of November 13, 2024 was likewise established by legislation.
It is expected that the next election will settle a protracted political battle between the opposition and the incumbent party. Conflicts between police and opposition supporters have already resulted from this debate in a number of Somaliland cities.
