US Ready to Prosecute Garads Fueling LA War
In the end, Somaliland would be successful when its stand and positions are clearly and openly articulated while also going the extra miles to make a gesture that will promote peace and stability.
The outgoing US ambassador to Somalia, Larry André, gave an interview to the Somali BBC and said that the individuals involved in fueling the conflict in Las Anod will be dealt with if they continue their actions.
The ambassador said that the United States is considering sanctions against those individuals, who he did not name.
The conflict in Las Anod has been going on since early February, and hundreds of people have died. Ambassador André, responding to a question asked by the BBC about their role in ending the conflict in Las Anod, said:
“We and other international friends issued a press release about the situation in Las Anod as soon as the war started. We called for an end to the conflict, a dialogue to resolve the conflict and for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the people displaced by the war. I spoke directly with the leaders of Hargeisa, Las Anod and Garowe.”
The ambassador, who was asked by the BBC what he discussed with the Hargeisa government, replied:
“We had a conversation, and I posted about it on social media. I told them what I told you recently that we need to stop the conflict, the parties to stop exchanging fire, that the issues between the parties be resolved through dialogue and that the people in distress be given humanitarian aid to each side. can come from.
The Ambassador refrained from directly answering a question regarding the specific issues and points discussed with the Somaliland President, and he replied:
“Had a deep conversation with Bihi, and then I posted it on social media.”
If I make it a habit to be open about things I discuss privately with leaders, that will result in leaders not talking to me anymore. Another issue I discussed with him is that the presidential election in Somaliland has been delayed, and this has also hindered other parts of Somalia where the previous administration has been in office for more than his term, and this is leading to severe instability.
What the Somali people want to know is what you as the US ambassador to Somalia and the President of Somaliland agreed to do to end the conflict in that city?
Ambassador André answering the question asked by BBC Somali said:
“Discussions are still ongoing between the United States, other international friends and the Somali leadership in Mogadishu regarding the Las Anod issue. It is part of the issue of traditional leaders sent by the government of Mogadishu who met with their counterparts and the leadership of Hargeisa. The details of those discussions will be made public when the parties reach an agreement.”
