Amoud Foundation First to Respond Somaliland Government’s Appeal for Drought Relief

Somaliland government has recently issued an alarming call to the public, aid organizations, and the world over the severe water shortage and drought conditions caused by the lack of spring rains in most parts of the country this year, especially in the eastern part of the country.

Speaking on behalf of Drought Relief Committee set up by the president Bihi to mobilize and coordinate relief efforts, of which he holds its chairmanship, the Somaliland Vice President said that severe drought has hit many parts of Somaliland.

Somaliland vice president – Saylici – added that the drought has affected nearly one million people in Somaliland’s six main regions.

The Vice President also said that the Somaliland Natural Disaster Management Agency has prepared food aid for the drought affected people and that the government will provide US$3 million to address the drought relief efforts.

Amoud Foundation – a US-based relief organization – delivers emergency drinking water to Gumays IDP camp in response to the Somaliland government’s call for drought relief. The organization promised to run the water trucking for a month to the camp.

. In the current drought in Somaliland, this organization has made significant strides, and intends to continue to do so during the drought crisis.

Amoud Foundation is particularly targeting the coastal area such as the Salel region. On January 16 this year, it reached out 100 drought-affected families in the village of Habaas in that region and gave out food rations.

Last week, the organization distributed food to 200 needy families in Hargeisa enough for a month. In the next two weeks, another 200 families are scheduled to receive food rations that could last for one month, bringing the families so far, the organization provided food to 500 families.
