Connecting Sheikh Secondary Students with Mentors at St Paul’s in London
Since returning from half-term, we’ve been hard at work strengthening our partnership with St. Paul’s School. In addition to Sheikh School in Somaliland using St Paul’s Colet mentoring app in math and science since February, its students are now also benefiting from an English conversation class with St Paul’s students.
The Colet Mentoring app, developed by former St. Paul’s pupils and EasyA co-founders Phil and Dom Kwok, is revolutionizing education in Somaliland, connecting Sheikh secondary students with mentors from St Paul’s in London.
This specialized Ed-Tech platform is fostering one-to-one learning and empowering our students to excel in STEM subjects as well as improve their English language skills.
Currently, we have 10 students participating in Colet Mentoring and 5 in English conversation classes, with plans to increase the latter to 10 after the initial three weeks. These sessions are conducted through Google Meet, providing invaluable one-to-one interactions, while materials are shared via Google Classroom.
The English component is crucial, as it gives Sheikh pupils access to native speakers, further enriching their learning experience. Not only are our Sheikh pupils benefiting from top-notch academic support, but they’re also building meaningful connections with their UK peers. This program is a win-win, with St Paul’s students also learning the value of other cultures and giving back on a global scale.
Given our emphasis on an evidence-based approach, the Colet Mentoring app is a perfect fit for us, because of the widely recognized impact of Ed-Tech on math and science learning. Indeed, studies have shown that one-to-one instruction through interactive apps leads to substantial gains. We’re thrilled to be at the forefront of this transformative education movement.
