US Congressman Calls for Somaliland Recognition

The United States holds an important position in the global political and economic spheres, and the narratives making rounds in its political establishments are predictors of and influential force for the political world order that is to come in the global stage.

Comments from US politicians are instantaneously known and highly noted around the world, and they often change the perception of world community in respect to the issues and cases they refer to.

the U.S. Representative for New Jersey’s 4th congressional district Rep. Chris Smith now supports Somaliland recognition. He recently made this remarks: “ There is one oasis of stability and that is Somaliland, which is a de facto independent from Somalia, I would like to hear comments from both State and USAID as to how to better recognize Somaliland in the global community…”

Rep. Christ Smith is a Republican who serves on many House of Representatives committees where he is either a senior or a ranking member for his congressional number of service years, and currently serving his 21st term as a congressman.

House Committee on Foreign Affairs is one of the House committees for which Christ is a member The committee also has Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born woman from Minnesota, who is currently in her second term and presumably believes preserving the old unity of Somali Republic – a concept contraindicating the Somaliland case for recognition.

So far Ilhan has not commented on the statement made by Rep. Christ on the recognition of Somaliland.

The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee plays a key role in the oversight, legislation, and advising on US foreign policy as well as development and security assistances aid to foreign countries.

The remarks by Congressman Christ add to the US stance on the Somaliland endeavor, and further solidifies the recent favorable gestures and sense of cooperation emitting from the United States.
